Began his newspaper carerr in 1841 as assistant editor of the New York Tribune. He was a member of the New York State Legislature in 1849 and in 1850 he was elected Speaker of the Assembly. In 1851 he founded the New York Times. In 1854 he was Lieutenant Governor of New York and in 1864 he was elected to Congress.
