Departed August 8, 1879 by the "Orlando" from Gothenburg together with his sister Emma Christina. He changed his name from Johnsson to Beckman. He worked in the same place in the mines in Michigan as his brother John Alfred. In 1884 he moved to Linn Grove, Iowa. worked first in grocery store. He started farming in the late 1880-ies. Then moved to South Dakota in 1894 on a homestead, back to Iowa in 1900. Then moved to Little Falls, MN in 1906 and farmed till he passed away on April 16, 1923. He won honour for the best herd of Holstein cows in Minesota for several years.
Victor Lars Beckman was born on Jan. 28 1856 in Linköping Sweden. He worked as an apprentice blacksmith. Victor came to America in about 1880 and worked in the mines at Champion, Michigan. He was critically injured in a mining accident, breaking his arm in four places and crushing his hip, which never really healed. The doctors wanted to remove his arm, but he told them if they did he would kill them. due to this accident, he had to leave the mines, but he did get a job at the hoisting eng ine.
victor had a hard childhood as he came from a very poor family of about 10 children and lived on a tenant farm. His father was killed by a run away team of horses.
victor’s last name was not originally Beckman, he changed it when he came to America because there were so many Johnson's. Three of Victor’s brothers and three of his sisters also came to America: Alfred, Franz, Swan, Emma, Agusta, and Clara. Their mother also came to America along with Frank and lived with one of her daughters in Fort dodge, Iowa. she died about 1900
Victor met his wife, Anna Swenson, while living in Sweden. She was born in Kelmar Lan, Smäland, Sweden Feb. 1, 1858. She came from a more prosperous family and had three sisters and two brothers. Victor sent for Anna in 1883 and they were married July 7, 1883. One of Anna’s brothers (Charlie) who came to America also changed his last name to Beckman.
Victor and Anna moved to Linngrove, Iowa in 1884 where he worked in a store. In 1896 they moved to Delmont, South Dakota where he began farming. In 1900 they moved back to Linngrove and in 1906 they moved to Little Falls, Minnesota where he continu ed to farm.
Victor and Anna had five children: Lydia, Agnes, Carl, Seth, and Emma.
Victor died on April 16, 1923 and Anna died on August 1, 1934
