Anna emigrated to the US in the late 1860’s, with her family. Sailing across the Atlantic took 6 weeks. Perhaps one of the reasons for Anna’s emigration was due to the extreme poverty in the Scandinavian country at the time -- owing to entire crop failure. During this time Anna survived by making bread made from flour mixed with ground bark from trees.
Anna arrived in Chicago where she worked as a maid until the great Chicago fire. The great fire was in 1871. She and her brother escaped being killed in the fire by jumping into the Chicago river with their clothes burning.
Anna met Ole while he was working in the Lumber yards of Chicago. They married, and as in those days the slogan “go west young man” was popular, Ole and Anna took their first son Adolf and moved to Buena vista county (Alta) Iowa in 1875. The Great Chicago fire was in 1870’s
